storefrontAs the owners of the first Thai restaurant in Pittsburgh, Santi and Surin came to Pittsburgh in 1967 as scholar graduate students from Bangkok, Thailand. After completing their studies, Santi worked as a professional engineer and Surin as a microbiologist in the Pittsburgh area for many years.

Surin’s family in Thailand had a catering background and she was known amongst her friends and family in Pittsburgh as being a very good cook. These friends soon encouraged her to open a Thai restaurant since one did not exist in Pittsburgh at the time.

In 1989, Pittsburgh was introduced to Thai food. Surin developed the menu and created the sauces. Thai Place Harmarville opened it’s doors with a lineup of three professional chefs from five-star hotels in Thailand: Dusit Thani, Hilton, and River Quay. Four more restaurants would follow: Thai Place Shadyside, Thai Place Fox Chapel, Thai Place Café (Oakland), and Thai Place Wexford. Numerous awards and accolades were received.

Twenty-six years later, Thai Place Shadyside, Fox Chapel and Wexford continue to serve authentic Thai cuisine. Thai Place has even served it’s popular Thai dishes to visiting celebrities such as U2, Martina Navratilova, Peter Falk and Troy Polamalu.
If you haven’t sampled Surin’s Thai food yet, then we invite you to do so. Surin, Santi and the Thai Place staff welcome you at any of their locations.
